Web Hosting

enjoy the freedom of your own low cost hosting - with added value

Take  control  of  your  own  website  hosting

Barely a week goes by where we’re not dealing with a client who’s having difficulties making changes to their website, moving a domain name or trying to end a contract with their website provider.

They’re often locked into a hosting package with their website provider and any move will be made as difficult as possible (with an exorbitant fee) or worse yet the website is simply non-transferable.

Day in day out, we find clients unwittingly paying monthly hosting fees way over prices they should be.

And it needn’t be this way.

Here at tartan we recommend two special web hosts we feel offer extraordinary services at super-low prices.

In fact we like them so much we use these hosts for almost all our own sites!

Top  Choice  One:   JustHost

This site you’re on now is hosted by JustHost. We love them because they offer unlimited hosting for unlimited websites on each hosting package – and for less than £3.00 a month.

We’ll typically build 20-30 websites on a single hosting package, so our hosting costs can be 10p per month per site.

Even if you “only” have one website, their hosting provides solid value when you consider their comprehensive and easy to use control panel (cPanel) which gives you full control of every aspect of your site, access to website statistics, and one-click installs for many popular web applications.

Even for the technically challenged, set up is remarkably quick and easy allowing you to give your web designer access to your hosting minutes after you’ve joined them. If you ever have an issue their support desk responds rapidly and are very helpful.

We’ve partnered with JustHost to give you a free domain name with every hosting account. Simply click this link we’ve pre-filled with your offer code and claim your free domain!

Top  Choice  Two:   BrainHost

Brainhost are an extraordinary company. Their hosting services are targeted at people who make money online using various affiliate programs, or from advertising revenue. Everything is geared up to making sites work fast and well, to maximise each websites revenue.

One of the most common types of client website we build is an information site or a review site using the affiliate and advertising revenue models – where our client will earn money from visitors clicks. For these, we use BrainHost (although they’re perfectly good for regular websites too!)

At the time of writing they’re actually offering to build a free top-quality money making website with every hosting package – although as web designers ourselves maybe we shouldn’t mention that!

Types of web hosting:

The three most common types of hosting packages used in the UK are Shared, Virtual Dedicated, and Dedicated – with Shared being the most common, due to its efficiency and low cost.

Shared web hosting service:

Your website is placed on the same server as many other sites, ranging from a few sites to hundreds or even thousands. Typically, all the domains can share a common pool of server resources, such as RAM and the CPU. The features available to clients using  this type of service can be quite extensive and because of this and the relative low costs of the hosting, shared hosting is the most common type of webhosting service being used by the majority of small and medium sized websites.

Virtual Dedicated Server:

Also known as a Virtual Private Server (VPS), the Virtual Dedicated Server divides server resources into “virtual” servers, where resources can be allocated in a way that does not directly reflect the underlying hardware. VPS will often be allocated resources based on a one server to many VPSs relationship, however virtualisation may be done for a number of reasons, including the ability to move a VPS container between servers. The users may have root access to their own virtual space. Customers are sometimes responsible for patching and maintaining the server. VPSs tend to be quicker than regular shared servers.

Dedicated hosting service:

The user gets his or her own Web server and gains full control over it (user has root access for Linux/administrator access for Windows); but, the user typically does not own the server. Another type of Dedicated hosting is Self-Managed or Unmanaged. This is usually the least expensive for Dedicated plans. The user has full administrative access to the server, which means the client is responsible for the security and maintenance of his own dedicated server. Dedicated servers tend to offer the fastest server speed with least outages or breaks in service – but are also the most expensive of the common options.
